ANGELA DAVIS: I think we could have been much more active. By the mid 1830s, cotton shipments accounted for more than half the value of all exports from the United States. The Confederates were in Perryville by 10:00 a.m., where Bragg made his headquarters at the Crawford house on the Harrodsburg Pike. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. Flush with cash from the sale of cotton, the South represented a prime, albeit small market.

Civil War Times 45 (March/April 2006): 30-36. He noted that any law passed by Congress could not take effect until January 1, 1808, but he urged Congress to act quickly "to prevent by timely notice expeditions which can not be completed before that day." Former slaveholders faced the bewildering fact of emancipation with everything from concern to rage to despair. Furious, he formed a delegation that telegraphed a petition to President Abraham Lincoln. The thirty years following the Civil War have been called the railroad age, with a five fold increase in mileage.

The defeat of the Confederates opened the river for the capture of Memphis, Tennessee two months later in the Battle of Memphis. Many doubted that American democracy would survive. One of these telegrams relates to a letter in the collection from Stapleton Crutchfield at the Virginia Military Institute to Colonel H. Douglas, the Democratic senior senator from Illinois, stirred up a storm by proposing a bill, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which enraged all free-soil supporters.
