While there are many anatomical variations observed in the cardiovascular system of annelids that appear to have evolved due to activity patterns, feeding behaviors and environment, some of the most complex systems are seen in the class Polychaeta. Others are capable of asexual reproduction, or sometimes, both methods of reproduction. Apparently some bran- chiopods have secondarily lost the carapace, and others have secondarily lost most or all of the abdominal ap- pendages.

The epidermis is partly cellu- lar and partly syncytial and is ciliated ventrally (thus the derivation of the phylum name: “hairy belly”). Furthermore, the various ions that contribute to the total salinity occur in fairly constant proportions. Inside the oocyst, the zygote under- goes a meiotic reduction division followed by schizo- gony to form sporozoites that are released from the oocyst into the gut, to migrate to the salivary gland where they remain until the next time the insect feeds.

In flatworms, the mouth is the only opening into the digestive cavity, and is located on the "belly" of the worm. mucus -- Sticky secretion used variously for locomotion, lubication, or protection from foreign particles. muscle -- Bundle of contractile cells which allow animals to move. Nervous System and Sense Organs The central nervous system of pycnogonids includes cerebral ganglia above the esophagus, circumenteric connectives, a subenteric ganglion, and a ganglionated ventral nerve cord (Figure 19.30A,B).

From the sube- sophageal ganglion, a pair of ventral nerve cords extends posteriorly, connecting a chain of four pairs of ganglia that serve the four pairs of legs. Parker (ed.), Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms, Vol. 2. Strengths of the collections reflect the research of current and past curators: Arachnids (especially spiders and scorpions ), aculeate (sting-bearing) Hymenoptera (including bees, wasps and ants), gall wasps (Cynipoidea), certain Diptera (especially Drosophilidae, Syrphidae and Tachinidae), Hemiptera, Isoptera (termites) and their symbiotic protists, macro- Lepidoptera (particularly of the New World), rove beetles (Staphylinidae), the primitively wingless insects (bristletails and silverfish), marine Mollusca, and fossils in amber.

A unique adaptation of many spiders is the ability to catch flying insects in webs of silk. However, at least by late Ediacaran times, large animals with bilateral symmetry had ap- peared, and some almost certainly had internal organs (e.g., the segmented, sheetlike Dickinsonia, which reached a meter in length; Figure 1.2). Most veligers have nephridia, which reverse sides, but the adult gills and gonads are not fully developed when torsion occurs.

All crustaceans possess, at least primitively, a cephalic shield (head shield) or a carapace. Hallman, TA, and ML Brooks Revision in review. This combination of speed and sensitivity to light may enable them to locate and feed on luminescent prey at night. What concentration is required to stimulate movement in the tentacles, and stimulate distention and opening of the mouth? All selections are tolerant of heavy pruning, which makes them suited for clipped hedges.

Since that time, others have presented mounting evidence that the platyhelminth acoelomate condition is secondarily derived from a coelomate an- cestor. In Chapter 24 we present a phylogenetic analysis of the animal phyla based on living animal taxa.

The chelicerae usually function in feeding. The centipedes (chilopods) bear one pair of walking legs per segment, and there may be up to 193 trunk seg- 4 CHAPTER EIGHTEENUNCORRECTED PAGE PROOFS 1. Although traditionally considered a harmless commensal, recent studies suggest that infec- tions by this protist routinely result in abdominal stress (e.g., diarrhea, abdominal pain). The toxin is injected into the victim through a terminal pore in the thread or is carried into the wound on the tubule surface (see Lotan et al. 1995).

In some neogastropods (e.g., certain species of Nucella), the encapsulated em- bryos cannibalize on their siblings, a phenomenon called adelphophagy; consequently, only one or two ju- veniles eventually emerge from each capsule.

Asexual fission also occurs in some holothurians, but the process is not well understood. A cap- illary network in the intestinal wall collects the nutri- ent-laden blood and leads to a series of intestinal veins that join a large subintestinal vein called the cecal por- tal vein, which carries blood forward beneath the gut to another capillary bed in the digestive cecum. There may be separate male and female gonopores, or only a single common gonopore. Most are small, 0.5–10 mm long, but some free-liv- ing forms exceed 1.5 cm in length, and certain highly modified parasites may reach 25 cm.
