There, in the water, was a new reflection. I looked up quickly. A young girl was standing at the top of the opposite bank. My eyes met hers, and we stared at each other for what seemed like a long time. I remember that the girl appeared curious but also a bit startled or embarrassed at my catching her spying on me. She was about my age. She had long, sandy hair with a little red in it. She also had freckles, which the distance was unable to hide. Her dress was light blue and very plain. She was so pretty it took me awhile to get my senses back.

The water was as motionless as the sky. The sun was warm. The cicadas, or locusts as we called them, lulled me with their motor-like sounds of summer and I lay back again, closed my eyes, and dozed.  . and something else. I blinked a couple of times to adjust my eyes. There, in the water, was a new reflection. I looked up quickly. A young girl was standing at the top of the opposite bank. My eyes met hers, and we stared at each other for what seemed like a long time. I remember that the girl appeared curious but also a bit startled or embarrassed at my catching her spying on me.

Sometimes a bush would move, and I knew that she, not the wind, had caused the movement. When an isolated breeze broke a still night, I would look for her. She made the creaking sounds that appeared after dark in the old house. Anything unusual I attributed to her. Even today, all these many years later, I still think of her when I hear what I now know to be only natural sounds. I also saw her silhouette several times in the ensuing weeks.
