Further up the river, on the east bank, was the second Mandan village, Nuptadi. Its chief was Black Cat. To the west, along the banks of the Knife River, lay three Hidatsa villages. The important Hidatsa chiefs included Black Moccasin and Le Borgne, also known as One Eye. In 1804, about 4,500 members of the Mandan and Hidatsa tribes lived in the five villages. C.
