Climate change ‘to hit food prices’

Soaring food prices could leave UK consumers forking out almost £6.50 for a loaf of bread and more than £18 for a pint of beer by 2030 unless urgent action is taken to avert dangerous climate change, environmentalists have claimed. A study for Friends of the Earth examining how warming temperatures could affect food supplies

£6.50 for a loaf of bread, £7 for a box of cornflakes and £18 for a pint of beer – these are the eye watering prices we could face in 2030 unless urgent action is taken to prevent dangerous climate change, Friends of the Earth has suggested.

blog action day: like the weather

every year, i participate in blog action day .  i like to tilt at windmills as much as the next grrl, and they always pick topics about which i tend to care. this year, the topic: climate change . as a mom and as a somewhat crunchy being, i tend to worry about polar bears and glaciers and all sorts of seemingly unnatural alterations to our present time-space continuum.

    Brewery’s Beer-Making Powers Hospital

Well if this isn’t irony I don’t know what is. The City Brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin has now begun a heat and power project that utilizes methane gas created at the brewery and converts it into clean energy to run nearby Gundersen Lutheran hospital. Methane from the brewery process is captured to run a biogas Jenbacher engine that in turn produces electricity that is then sent back to the grid

Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake: California Doesn’t Need Schwarzenegger to Get Its Kraut On

Big Bear Lake, California: It’s actually a fascinating and easy ten-hour drive from Salt Lake City to this old and popular resort town about an hour-and-a-half east of LA. That is if you don’t mind driving I-15 through Las Vegas or looking at literally miles upon miles of yucca, sand, mountains and blue sky.For a ski town, Big Bear Lake is less like Aspen and Park City and more like Alta: no frills but a lot of character

Philadelphia Has Other Green Things Besides the Eagles

I was born in Philadelphia and grew up eating those great Philly Cheese Steaks from Pat’s and the second best in the world from a little hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop around the corner from where I lived.  There were vegetarians back in the 50’s and 60’s, but they mainly stayed away from the steak shops, or more commonly, broke their vow of no meat to satisfy their own tummy and taste buds. We used to grab some fully-loaded cheese steaks and hoagies, add some Hires Birch Beer and listen to t
