French Beer Week: Fischer Tradition Amber

Good news and bad news: Fischer Amber is one of the more common beers to come out of France and likely one you’ll find easily (if you find any French beers). Hop culture in California circa 1900

These days “Hop Culture in California” means bitter beers, beers with lots of hop flavors and aromas, and this time of year beers brewed with fresh hops. But in 1900 it was the title of Farmer’s Bulletin No. 115 from the U.S.

Equity for Punks and more Sunday reading

A few things you might have missed last week: – The held the Iron City Brewing auction Friday and yesterday in Pittsburgh. – Granted Equity For Punks might be important to the future of BrewDog , has led to considerable discussion about the value of the company , and certainly reminds us that no matter how much fun brewers appears to be having they are involved in serious business.

Tasting: Double blind and by the numbers

Pardon that the example of how this could work comes from the wine world — making it my second wine originated post in two days — because it’s very beer relevant. Also, as Ed Carson pointed out with his comment about the rather dense posturing about the brain and wine that there’s a danger of violating New Beer Rules, Nos. 5 and 8, about taking beer too seriously.

Has beer lost its democratice edge?

Inspired, at least in part, by BrewDog’s Equity for Punks , Adrian-Tierney Jones has several dozen questions for us this morning (a.m. in the U.S., that is): I am talking about the sly sense of exclusiveness that is seeping through the world of craft beer.

    Hopmonk

We finally got a chance to go to Hopmonk  in Sebastapol, the latest beer venture from Dean Biersch, cofounder of the Gordon Biersch brewery chain. It’s in a neat old building with exposed beams built, according to their website in 1903.
